I get asked all the time what the is the number one skill that a Puyallup baby photography should have. More than anything else, even above skill with my equipment, I truly believe the answer to that question is patience. If I had to pick a number two it would be confidence. So many times all that a baby needs to take a session from a total flop to a happy success is a photographer that is willing to give her time. Sometimes little people just need to know that there moms are going to stay. They time to take in all the newness around them. They need to have a chance to warm up to you. And all that mom needs is to feel from her photographer confidence that even though her daughter is currently clinging to her for dear life and huge crocodile tears are silently rolling their way down her daughter’s cheeks, that everything is going to be okay. Beautiful pictures can be obtained. All that is needed is time. That is one of the blessing of hiring a custom photographer instead of taking your child to a retail location running on a pack them in and get them out the door business model. I have time. You have paid me for my time. For little Samantha that is all it took. Time and well, the third most important thing, cheerios. Snacks! I tease moms all the time that we are teaching stress eating at an early age, lol. But snacks are a lifesaver. Samantha just needed to know she was in a safe place, that her mom was going to stay and that I was willing to feed her as many cheerios as she wanted. Success! A pretty girl got pretty pictures.

Amy has grown up so much since I last saw her at her newborn session. What a difference a year makes! I was talking to her parents during her photo shoot about all the adventures they have had together as a family this past year. So much happens in such short time. When you think about it we really do pack a lot of stuff into every little bit of space in our lives as we can. It was so fun to have Amy’s family back at the studio. I got to see Liz too. She was an adorable helper and REALLY, REALLY wanted to be in a portrait with her little sister. Such cute sisters! Amy was a little timid. But it always goes to show how much a little extra time and care can take a session from o to 10. Look at all the beautiful smiles we got from this little sweetie!

I feel like I can only be describing Mary Poppins when I say practically perfect in every way. But as a University Place newborn photographer I see a lot of babies and Miliano was all that. The most handsome little guy ever. He is going to have all the ladies swooning when his mom takes him out shopping with her. I can just see the seen at Target…
One of my favorite times of the year to take newborn portraits is fall. It is so fun to work the season into sets. I love the rich colors. I love the gender neutrality (spring colors and flowers are so girly). I love how it documents the time of year a baby is born. I was super happy that Miliano’s mom was cool with letting me add a little bit of the season into her son’s newborn session. Miliano looked like a baby super model with the colors his mommy picked out for his photo shot. My favorite color on boys is taupe. It looks good on everyone. My daughter’s favorite image from his session is him posed with his little tush up, wearing the sleepy cap. My favorite image is this one, where he is in the basket with his beautiful little head resting on his wrists. Which image is your favorite?

Sometimes a baby is just so excited to see the world the leap through hoops to come early. Little Emalyn was ready to go. She had decided that she was done waiting around for that silly due date. She wanted to be held and cuddle and cooed at. And so taking matters into her own hands she orchestrated her own early arrival. Thankfully she was strong and determined. Though she had to stay in the NICU (detention for early birds), she surpassed all of her doctors expectations. Like the due date she so earnestly beat, she worked hard to be ahead of the game with every NICU milestone. What a little go getter she is! I was so excited when her mommy called to book her newborn session. It had been several years since I had seen the Berry family. As Sophia’s newborn and baby milestone photographer I had gotten to know Christina and Nic a little bit. They are such a fun, easy going family and always a delight to work with in my studio. Sophia was an excellent big sister. She is going to have so much fun with a baby sister in the home. I hope that little Emalyn will continue to be a fierce little kitten and wish her great success and continuing to prove the world wrong!

Once she was a baby….
Just a year ago I was busy doing the newborn photographer thing and photographing this brand new princess. She was so tiny and precious and such a good little sleeper for me. I still remember how sweet her big sister was to her. To look back at her newborn photography session click here.
Now she is a toddler…
Every time I have a mother email me about booking a milestone session for their baby I have to go back and look at their baby pictures to check their birthday because I just can’t believe it is already time for a birthday cake! I have seen Marit a few times throughout the year for mini sessions around the holidays and she still was a baby in my head. But the little girl I saw at the studio was most assuredly a toddler. She played, laughed and stood like a champ. Her personality is unfolding day by day and it won’t be long before she is talking and racing around the house with her big sister. I think of my girls and how happily they have played together for so many years now and think this is just the beginning for these two beauties. At only a little more than a year apart they will be so close and share so many things together. I am so happy they have each other.
My favorite part of Marit’s session what watching her enjoy her cake pop. Her mom opted for a less messy way to celebrate her birthday and a cake pop was BRILLIANT. She has shared them with her sister before, but never had her very own. She was so happy. So many cute pictures. It was the perfect alternative to a cake smash.
